WHO States, “One Billion People Are Affected By Neurological Disorders

Neurological ailments varying from migraines to Alzheimer's disease affect almost one billion people across the world. This was reported// by WHO in ‘Neurological disorders: Public health challenges’.

The report states that 24 million people are affected by disease like Alzheimer's and other dementias and 50 million are hit by epilepsy which requires far-reaching care. These issues are compounded when there is ageing population in the developed and developing countries.

Migraine, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, strokes, and brain injuries which affect the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, and muscles are the other neurological illnesses. These ailments may result in behavioral problems, loss of memory and speech.

This report discusses the reasons for unavailable treatments for such neurological disorders. Dearth of skilled personnel, meager supply of vital drugs which includes cheap medicines like aspirin and incidence of conservative practices contribute to the higher incidence of neurological disorders especially in countries like Africa.

These disorders could be minimized if some simple precautionary procedures like immunization against meningitis, wearing of helmets and seat belt, early detection of malaria are followed stringently.
