WHO Spearheads a Global Initiative for Development of Malaria Vaccine by 2015

Bangkok: The World Health Organization has fueled a global initiative to develop a vaccine against malaria,// the disease which infects nearly 500 million people annually.

The objective for the ‘Malaria Vaccine Technology Roadmap’ is to realize the development of a first generation vaccine to fight Malaria by the year 2015.

Malaria has been conspicuous in the world for very many years, and rightly it is one of the oldest diseases in the world. Notwithstanding, a paltry $79 million was pumped in 2004, for research towards development of a vaccine. Although there are more than 30 prospective vaccines in the development stage, yet lack of funds for conducting clinical trials is causing a setback to malaria preventive strategies, more so in countries where the disease is widespread.

Now, The Roadmap has set a goal of developing a first-generation vaccine, which is 50% effective enabling protection for more than a year. The next goal would be to realize a second-generation vaccine by 2025, which is more than 80 percent effective and would aid protection for more than four years. The Roadmap initiative seeks to overcome prevailing roadblocks, to realize its vision of a vaccine by 2015.
