WBSACS Says Number Of AIDS Cases On The Rise

The State of West Bengal in India is witnessing an alarming increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases. The State has a total of 3,500 AIDS //cases, while the number of HIV cases has gone beyond 8,500. The percentage of increase registered in HIV cases in 2004 was at 0.5%, in the State, while it was only at 0.39% in 2003, according to West Bengal State AIDS Prevention and Control Society (WBSACS) sources. India is home to about 5.1 million HIV/AIDS patients. West Bengal is witnessing a rise in the number of cases in spite of the awareness campaigns being conducted in the State, which also cover the red light areas. The programme will be scaled up with the State’s mobile sex workers who are reportedly more vulnerable to the infection. The WBSACS has over 2,000 HIV/AIDS positive members.
