Vladeck to head the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey a state medical school is in financial trouble. Governor Jon S Corzine nominated Bruce C. Vladeck a nationally recognized health care administrator to become its interim president. //

Vladeck was in charge of Medicare and Medicaid programs in the Clinton administration. The school is in bad shape due to the revelations about financial irregularities. It also agreed to repay the federal government $4.9 million after acknowledging that it had double-billed Medicaid for years. University officials have also been accused of larding the payroll with patronage hires and doling out $700 million in no-bid contacts.

Mr. Corzine hopes that Mr. Vladeck experience and counseling would be best used by the authorities to manage the school during a turbulent period. The permanent president would be selected later by the board of trustees, who are appointed by the governor later this year. Mr. Vladeck said he did not want the permanent position as he had committed to return to a job as senior health policy advisor with Ernst & Young, the accounting and consulting firm.

Mr. Vladeck said that the institution is a very prestigious one and would get through this turbulent period in a short period of time.
