Vitamin D Could Bring Sunshine to Breast Cancer Patients

New studies conducted under the auspices of Dr Carlo Palmieri, of Imperial College London, on a small group of women affected with breast cancer have revealed// a significant association of Vitamin D with the progression of breast cancer to advanced stages.

According to the study elevated levels of circulating Vitamin D could play a significant role in retarding the advance of the disease in a patient. Blood tests of the women who underwent the study have shown increased levels of vitamin D in those women who suffer from preliminary stages of cancer. Women with advanced stages of cancer exhibited a significant drop in vitamin D levels in blood samples.

It has been inferred from this study that Vitamin D could actually help in inhibiting the cancer to progress to more advanced levels.

279 women with breast cancer took part in this research project. 75 of them were in advanced stages of cancer .who showed lower vitamin D in their blood reports.

Previous researches in breast cancer studies have shown a higher incidence of cancer among women who live in places where there is lesser exposure to sunlight, as in higher latitudes.

Vitamin D is known to be synthesized in the body only with the exposure of skin to the sun. Rarely obtained from few other sources like oily fish eggs, and fortified milk, it is essential to the body for absorption of calcium from food sources. Recent laboratory tests have revealed that Vitamin D is capable of curbing the cell division in cancer cells or malignant cells.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon , France more than a million cases detected worldwide annually. Early detection is the key to successful intervention and treatment of cancer.
