Researchers from Pentagon’s Office of Naval Research are working on using virtual reality to help patients deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). //

In this research, scientists are creating simulating virtual realities that let the patients suffering from PTSD to go through the similar experiences they had felt when they had their first exposure with the traumatic experience that had left them unable to cope reality. Called exposure therapy, through this procedure of reliving the past in a simulated world of virtual reality patients have been successfully treated for their stress disorders.

The virtual reality recreates the sight, sound and smells of the experience that had left so much of an impression in the lives of the patients.

People suffering from PTSD had said that by reliving their experiences have helped them overcome their sense of panic and get a control of their stress reactions that otherwise set in whenever they are exposed to any possible stimulants connected to their terrible experience. Researchers said that this therapy could work best for patients like soldiers who had gone through the ravages of the war, or the victims who had survived the catastrophe of September bombing of WTC, or perhaps the victims of last December’s Tsunami.
