Valiathan Committee Seeks Documents from AIIMS

Setting in motion the process to review the functioning of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Centre's Expert Committee has sought details about the institute's rules and regulations. //

The four-member committee, set up in the backdrop of the bitter row between Health Minister A Ramadoss and AIIMS chief P Venugopal, has sought deatils about the organisation, its various activities and reports of earlier committees which had reviewed the functioning of the Institute.

The committee, headed by M S Valiathan founder Director of Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, would be given the Joseph Bhore report, on whose recommendations the institute was founded, official sources said.

The committee, which has also sought details about the staff strength and number of specialists in the Institute, would make recommendations on efficient utilisation of manpower resources with respect to attracting the best talent, retention of faculty, provision of better opportunities for utilising the talent available.

The Centre had earlier formed two committees headed by Dr. Ramalingaswamy and Dr S P Agarwal to look into the affairs of the institute.

The Bhore Committee was formed in 1943, during the British Rule, and it submitted its report in 1947.

The Valiathan Committee held its first meeting on Tuesday to discuss the procedures to be followed for the review of the Institute.

The terms of reference of the committee include making recommendations to turn AIIMS into a centre of excellence and a leader in public healthcare for the entire country.
