Vaginal Delivery Should Be an Option after Multiple Cesareans

According to the study conducted by Dr. Mark B. Landon of Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, Columbus, it was found that it was not risky// to attempt vaginal delivery for a woman who has had multiple C-sections done.

The study results were published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology. But previous studies say that it is very risky for women who have had several previous cesarean deliveries to opt for a vaginal birth when compared to women who have had only one previous c-section. The author tells that the study is mainly conducted to advise women on the relative safety and relative risks of both repeat cesarean delivery and trials of labor after cesarean.

Dr. Vern L. Katz, from the Center for Genetics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Eugene, Oregon said that the advice given should be specific and individualized to suit the individual woman's situation. Dr. Mark B. Landon examined data on women attempting vaginal birth after a single or multiple cesareans and found that uterine rupture is one of the serious complications associated with labor. Statistics show that the complication was documented in 9 of 975 women who had had multiple prior cesareans (0.9 %) and in 115 of 16,915 women with a single previous cesarean (0.7%). But the percentage is not statistically significant and the absolute risk is small.
