Vaccines, tobacco taxes and condoms in disease control

Information on the Disease Control Priorities project that plans the top health investments for disease control in developing countries // was given to health ministers from the Americas at the Pan American Health Organization Directing Council.

According to the Pan American Health Organization, vaccines, taxes on tobacco and condom distribution are some of the "best buys" in health improvement in developing countries.

The recently released Disease Control Priorities project reveals that along with the prior mentioned measures, prevention and treatment of childhood pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria and vitamin and iron supplements to children and pregnant women would be the best investments.

"In far too many countries, unnecessary poor health conditions persist," Dr. George Alleyne, the Pan American Health Organization's former director and an editor of the project, said in a statement.

Dr. Julio Frenk, Mexico's health minister, added, "Health care is one of the most effective means of fighting poverty." Some of the highly effective and economical measures are provision of insecticide-treated bed nets in malaria-endemic areas, implementation of traffic regulations and speed breakers at dangerous intersections to check traffic-related injuries and treatment of tuberculosis.
