Vaccine for septic conditions

According to pre-clinical study it is observed that it is possible to protect against sepsis. When bacteria invade the bloodstream of a patient with suppressed immunity, sepsis might result.// This condition of overwhelming infection can be fateful. And treatment with antibiotics is often ineffective.

Researchers at The Scripps Institute in the US have been looking at a vaccine for sepsis. It is based on one of the toxins which bacteria produce and causes the symptoms of septic shock. Working with animals, they have shown how the vaccine can protect against sepsis, by stimulating the immune system to fight against it. It's hoped that in the future the vaccine might be used to protect humans by being administered before surgery. This might help those at risk of hospital infections that often lead to sepsis.
