VELscope instrument to detect mouth cancer

Oral cancer can be now detected by using a hand-held scope called VELscope, which has been developed by B.C. Cancer Agency from the fund given by National Institute of Dental Craniofacial Research. The devise emits a blue light that // is better than the conventional white light in detection of cancerous lesions in the mouth. The VELscope would be very useful for early detection of oral cancer as better treatment is achieved when oral cancer is treated in its early stages.

A clinical trial involving 400 patients is being undertaken using the new instrument and this VELscope would offer better diagnostic values to detect early recurrence in people who had been earlier treated for oral cancer.
