Use of Trans Fat to Be Banned in New York

Meet organized by the city board of health on 5th Dec ’05. The agenda would be to cut down the use of Trans fat in the commercially prepared foods such as cookies, pastries and// other fast food.

Thomas Frieden, the health commissioner said, 'We hope that the board of health will have significantly changed the original proposal, taking into consideration the concerns raised by 24,000 restaurateurs in New York City.'

Trans Fat is said to increase the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases, as they tend to increase the concentration of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and reduce the concentrations of HDL (good cholesterol). According to some experts Trans fat is more harmful than saturated fat as well.

Sources of Trans Fat are oils which have been Hydrogenated. One reason why many people prefer to use these fats is because of their high shelf life.

But according to this plan, restaurants will be given more time to make this welcome change.

In the near future there might be additions like the calorie content of foods will have to be mentioned.
