Use Of Viagra May Affect Eyesight

Men who have a history of heart problems and consume anti-impotency pills like viagra run a very high risk of getting their eyesight damaged, according to a study conducted by the University of Alabama. //The researchers suggest that taking viagra may result in the anterior optic nerve receiving a lesser blood flow, giving rise to tissue damage. The British Medical Journal has published the report.

The risk to their eyesight may be increased tenfold as a result of medications like Viagra or Cialis. The loss of vision may also be irreversible. Even as doctors exercise caution while prescribing such drugs, many buy them online. The optic nerve runs a tenfold chance of sustaining damage as a result of consuming such drugs in the case of men who had already suffered heart attacks. Those who had suffered strokes also run a similar risk. This condition which is known as non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy occurs in only one eye, and it is also known by the name ‘naion’. This is also called the stroke in the eye.

Men who do not have a history of heart attacks do not run a very high risk of contracting this disease. The Viagra was launched in 1988, and as many as 23 million men are believed to have consumed it. These findings have however been rejected by the drug’s manufacturer Pfizer. The company is reported to have conducted trials involving 13,000 patients. The company has stated that naion is associated with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The naion condition is quite common among patients who are aged over 50 years in the US, and the country witnesses as many as 6,000 people contacting the condition every year.
