Unpasteurised juices found to be potential health hazards

Juices form an integral part of a healthy diet. But with the advent of technology lots has been found unhealthy with untreated juice. Consumers today have numerous choices when it comes to drinking juice // . One thing that is overlooked is whether juices have undergone safety treatments from microbes.

Though illness due to juice is rare, several outbreaks of diarrhoeal illness due to juice have been reported. Some known outbreaks in the US are well documented

1996: Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to untreated apple juice sold in multiple states

2003: Outbreak of Cryptosporidium infections linked to apple cider inadequately treated with ozone

2005: Outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to inadequately treated orange juice marketed as ‘fresh squeezed’ and sold in multiple states

The advantage with pasteurized juice is that since it is heated to a high temperature for a short time before it is sold; pathogens (germs) which may be present in the liquid are killed.

Therefore it is advisable to consume pasteurised milk rather than fall ill.
