UP students of King George’s Medical University wore black badges on Sunday to express their support to their counterparts in New Delhi and Mumbai// in their protest against the Centre’s proposed move to introduce 27 per cent OBC quota in admissions to medical colleges.

Former president KGMU RDA Devashish Shukla said, ‘ We will not disrupt any patient care services but at the same time mark our protest against the atrocities of police against our counterparts.’

Under the Essential Services Maintenance Act strikes are banned in medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government had dissolved the Resident Doctors’ Association in January this year in this regard.

Besides this, the policy of 50 per cent quota comprising 23 per cent for Scheduled Castes/Tribes and 27 per cent for other backward classes in admissions and faculty appointment has already been implement in Uttar Pradesh since 1989, making the UP branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) indecisive about its stand on the reservation issue.
