There has been a considerable fall in the donations towards providing relief to the earthquake-affected people in Pakistan, according to the United Nations (UN). The December 2005 contributions were not even one third of what was received in November 2005. //

Jan Vandemoortele, the UN Resident Coordinator has appealed to the donor nations to release the amounts that had been pledged by them. A special envoy will be appointed by the UN to get more funding for the Operation Winter Race rescue efforts. The plastic sheets, quilts, and blankets which are required alone will cost US$ 4.5 million.

Priority is being given to the affected people living at high altitudes. A joint strategy has been drawn up by the Pakistan Army and the humanitarian organizations. A report has already been finalized by the Shelter Cluster with regard to the quantity and quality of tents required for the affected people who live below 5,000 feet, which is estimated to cost US$ 31 million. Structural and thermal protection is needed by people living in tents during the winter season.
