UAE Plans to Implement Anti-smoking Law

United Arab Emirates is drafting a law to curb smoking to secure peoples' rights to the highest standards of health .

"The UAE is very much committed towards implementing a comprehensive anti-tobacco law to reduce the spread of the habit in the society, especially among children and adolescents," Ali bin Shukur, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Health, was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.

A draft bill on smoking is being deliberated at the UAE Ministerial Council.

Consumption and promotion of tobacco products will be restricted if such a law is implemented. Selling tobacco to minors and exposure of young people to environmental tobacco smoking will also be banned.

The enforcement of the anti-tobacco law will greatly help in curbing smoking, Shukur said, urging public and private institutions to make more efforts in this regard.

In addition, the ministry will implement recommendations of the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which seeks to secure rights of people to the highest standards of health, Shukur added.
