Two Babies Undergo Transplant Surgeries

A domino transplant surgery was conducted through which 3-month-old Jason Wolfe received a lung transplant, while Kayla Richardson, a 12 week old baby received a heart // transplant in Ohio. The surgery was possible as a baby in another state passed away, and its organs were compatible to the two babies who were in need of the transplants.

The dead child’s heart and lungs were transplanted to Jason, while the heart of Jason was transplanted to Kayla. This was considered safe as a lung transplant alone involved more sewing and suturing, when compared to a combined heart and lung transplant. Two teams of doctors worked continuously for 12 hours to accomplish this.

This was a particularly delicate operation as the patients involved were small babies. The critical stages have been passed in both the cases. The critical surgery was conducted at the Columbus Children's Hospital, and involved the best available surgical skills in addition to advanced medical technology.
