Transcendental Meditation To The Rescue of Cardiac Patients

According to a report published in Ethnicity & Disease (Winter 2007), transcendental meditation has a positive effect in patients suffering from congestive heart// failures.

Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania had conducted a study on 23 African American who were admitted in New York Heart hospital for cardiac failures. This group had a mix of men and women with an average age of 64. This group was randomized to perform either transcendental meditation or health education besides their usual medical care. The patients were monitored on heart function, depression and re-hospitalizations for an extended period of time.

The TM group had fared better than the control group in terms of the six minute walk test after both 3 and 6 months of practice in TM. They also bettered in quality of life measurements, depression, and had fewer re-hospitalizations.

Ravishankar Jayadevappa from the University of Pennsylvania who headed this study said TM brings down the sympathetic nervous system activation linked with stress which is responsible for heart attacks. There is also a significant improvement in terms of survival rates.

Dr. Jeyadevappa averred that further study involving more patents is needed to consolidate this finding. He also added that the present study is in continuation with an older one which talked about the positive effects of TM on high blood pressure, stress, metabolic syndrome, left ventricular hypertrophy and severity of atherosclerosis.
