Three More Bird Flu Cases Reported By China

China has reported three more cases of bird flu, even as the government has given approval to clinical trials of a human vaccine against the virus.//

The latest outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of the flu were in the far-western region of Xinjiang, the southwestern province of Yunnan and the northwestern region of Ningxia, the agriculture ministry said on its website.

About 2,500 birds died in Yunnan's Chuxiong district Thursday, and 230 died in Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, the ministry said.

H5N1 bird flu was also confirmed in 38 birds that died last week near Urumqi, the Xinjiang regional capital.

Ministry officials oversaw the culling of about 177,000 birds at poultry farms within a three-kilometre radius of the outbreaks, it said.

The latest outbreaks have taken the total number of confirmed bird-flu outbreaks in China to 24 this year.
