The hazards of domestic travel

Researchers are into a new study these days on the hazards faced during travel. People travelling in the US and Canada this year need to be wary of the risk posed by outdoor adventure. Many travel experts expect people to holiday at home this year, after the terror attacks of September 11. //An outdoor adventure holiday with lots of wildlife and sports appeals to many.

Please be aware of the special hazards involved in this kind of trip, say experts at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Wildlife, such as bear, cougar and moose which you may come into contact with, can be unpredictable. There's also a risk of infection from leptospirosis and giardia. You may contract leptospirosis through contact with water contaminated with the urine of rats or dogs. So protect yourself if you're going swimming or rafting in country rivers, streams or lakes. Giardia is an intestinal infection that comes from ingestion of contaminated lack or stream water.
