The conception of Anya, a period-free contraceptive pill

A contraceptive pill intended for consumption without a break is threatening to compete with the conventional oral contraceptive pill//. The pill, named Anya, manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, is awaiting approval by health Canada, which will enable women to give a merry slip to the monthly period! Currently unavailable in neither United States nor Canada, Anya is undergoing a testing period marked by extensive clinical trials.

This pill is the first of its kind that is required to be taken daily without a lapse. Christine Derzko, an obstetrician and gynecologist from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, who is a keen supporter of the technique in the pill, expressed the extent of relief it would bring to women, who suffer acute menstruation discomfort.

A two-year study on Anya conducted on 79 women revealed that nearly 80% of the 79 women confirmed cessation in the bleeding. About 5 percent reported slight bleeding and spotting. According to researchers, Anya encompasses the same measure of risks like that of a traditional oral contraceptive.

This too is not without criticism, a body that does not support the unnatural cessation of menstrual cycle, say the study has not completely gauged the permanent health implications of using a period-free contraceptive. The lurking fear of breast cancer, or lowered bone density for women on the pill on long durations, is still very much on top of mind. The long term side effects need to be studied extensively before the pill can be considered absolutely safe.
