The pharmaceutical corporation, Eli Lilly and Co., launched ‘The HumaPen Memoir’ the world's first digital insulin pen with a memory, on Thursday. //
The HumaPen Memoir simplifies the management of diabetic patients who require timely insulin injections.
The manufacturer said, “ the pen was designed to meet the needs of people with diabetes who take several shots of mealtime insulin each day."
The unique pen memory device can help the patient to know the previous and the next injection time thus preventing additional punctures. The pen is battery operated and uses a chip for its memory, which can record up to the last 16 insulin doses. Patients can review these doses on the digital display, which also includes the priming doses.
The pen looks like a writing pen. It does not look like a medical instrument, which enables a more discreet public injection use. However, the pen has to be used along with its top-selling insulin, Humalog.
A clinical study conducted on experienced pen users found that 81 percent of the participants preferred using the new Memoir pen to the pen they were previously using for its ease and convenience.
Out of around 21 million Americans with diabetes more than 4 million take daily insulin injections. Of the 4 M, approx 800,000 use a pen. The remaining 3 million in the U.S. use the economical syringe/insulin vial.
The market price of the digital insulin pen is $100. The cost is not inclusive of the insulin cartridges.
A doctor at a diabetes center in Boston said, “Though the pen is wonderful, the price will prevent a physician from prescribing it to his patients.”
