The Memory Retains Things that We Have forgotten

We might feel that we have forgotten certain things in everyday life, but in a study conducted researchers have noted that whatever we have forgotten does still stay in our memory//.

Sander Daselaar of the University of Amsterdam and Roberto Cabeza of Duke University, conducted a study in which they explain that our brain houses more memories than we think it, does. According to the online edition of health magazine WebMD the study was conducted on 14 healthy young adults and found that the healthy brain might hold memories that we have supposedly forgotten.

The researchers initially showed the participants a list of 120 real words mixed with 80 words without any meaning. They then showed them another list and asked them to remember the words that had been on the first list. At the same time they also conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brains of participants.

As participants were reviewing the second word list, the brain scans showed more activity in a certain brain area like the posterior median temporal lobe as they were seeing words that had been on the first word list. Participants sometimes did not remember the words that they had seen in the first list, and at times they were sure that they had not seen the words before at all.

The researchers explain that memory might probably have a photo album in the brain, but sometimes it could be that we forget what's on the photo album's pages. The research appeared in The Journal of Neuroscience.
