The MRSA Superbug May Yet Be Overcome

Scientists in Scotland have discovered that an ordinary kitchen sponge can play a prominent role in destroying MRSA superbug, which is capable of resisting many // antibiotics. It has already claimed several thousand lives. One single brand of the kitchen-scouring pad alone contains the cure to this on its surface.

The antibiotic, according to reports can be grown on one particular kitchen sponge only. The MRSA is a hospital acquired infection which is infecting several thousands of people. The sponge grown bacteria is capable of killing strains like listeria in addition to the superbug. The scientists do not however know as to why the bacteria which produce these antibiotics can be grown on the sponges of one manufacturer alone.

The Morrisons supermarket, which sells the sponges, is unwilling to reveal the name of the manufacturer of the sponge. The Heriot Watt University’s researchers are trying to identify the manufacturers of the sponge. If the clinical trials of the antibiotic were to be completed successfully, the threat of the superbug could come to an end once and for all. There is also a possibility that a strain belonging to the MRSA family may come into existence at a later date which will be capable of resisting antibiotics of every description. The superbug takes advantage of the poor hygiene standards of patients admitted in hospitals.
