The Long Term Effects on Women Born With a Low Birth Weight

Women with birth weight lesser than 5lb 12oz, could be prone to certain pregnancy related complications later on in life//, scientists revealed. A recent study showed that such women carry a 60% possibility of suffering from pre-eclampsia, a condition known to be extremely harmful to both the mother and her unborn baby.

The risk was twice as much for women who were born with a low birth weight and whose mothers suffered pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.

Lead scientist Dr Karin Zetterstrom, of Orebro University Hospital, said: "Women born low-weight suffer an increased risk even if pre-eclampsia does not run in the family."

Preeclampsia is a condition that causes high blood pressure, blood clots and could be the reason behind kidney damage. It is the cause of death of nearly 600 babies and six mothers in Britain annually. The only treatment option is a caesarian delivery.
