The Cause Of Visual Problems Different From Race To Race

Researchers say , the leading cause of blindness for blacks and whites is not the same. Their study shows macular degeneration // is the leading cause of blindness for whites, while cataracts and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness for blacks.

More than 50 percent of the white patients studied lost their vision because of macular degeneration. In contrast, more than 60 percent of the black patients became blind because of cataracts and glaucoma. Researchers say cataracts were the leading cause of low vision. The leading cause of blindness among Hispanics was glaucoma.

Researchers conclude saying that the specific causes of visual impairment, and especially blindness, vary greatly by race and ethnicity and they predict that the prevalence of visual disabilities will increase markedly during the next 20 years, owing largely to the aging of the U.S. population.
