The Best Christmas Gift

No Santa could have delivered a more welcome gift. Two-year-old Markus Dejong is celebrating Christmas, having survived a liver transplant// from a part of his father’s.

The operation was carried out successfully at the Stollery’s Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Canada.

A year ago Markus developed jaundice as a tumor on his liver developed and swelled to the size of an orange.

He was put on an organ transplant list and had a wait of 9 months before the operation.

On November 7, the left lobe was removed from Mark (father of Markus)’s liver and transplanted into the toddler’s liver.

Speaking to newspersons, Dr. Susan Gilmour said the portion of liver transplanted would grow to a full sized one that will function normally.

That of the toddler’s father will regenerate in 6 to 12 weeks approximately.

She attributed the success of the operation to the large number of pediatric liver transplants carried out by the hospital.

Western provinces in Canada have made a decision to concentrate certain kinds of surgery in specific cities, in order to increase the quality of rare procedures.

Father and son are both doing well as they celebrate Christmas , bound by closer ties.
