Thailand’s Decision to Manufacture Generic AIDS Drug Wins Acclai

In the wake of escalating costs of second-line HIV-AIDS drugs, Thailand has allowed, for the first time, the manufacture of the cost effective version of the// drug ‘Efavirenz’, which has been a boon to many sufferers.

Merck & Co Inc, the patent holder of the drug has opposed the decision of the government to issue a five year license, allowing the manufacture and import of the drug, also termed, Stocrin. But this move has been seconded by AIDS activists and health experts.

"This is both a brave and a progressive step by the Royal Thai Government to place the interests of people living with HIV in Thailand front and centre," UNAIDS country coordinator Patrick Brenny said
