Technology-enabled diagnosis by overseas radiologists

New Zealand: An acute dearth of radiologists in New Zealand has led the Hawkes Bay district health board to seek the assistance of radiologists worldwide; a scheme being tried out for the first time //to help ease out the mounting backlog of undiagnosed medical reports. The medical council is not too happy with this decision, as the overseas radiologists are not registered under the New Zealand Medical Council.

The board had earlier announced that this project would seek the contribution of radiologists in Australia, Britain and the United states, where the response would be received within an hour of receiving the email messages.

Ms Van Deursen, a spokeswoman of the health board said, "We've reviewed their CVs here. They have been approved by the DHB's internal credentialing committee and our HR department have independently checked the US database to check they are registered ... "

But Medical Council chairman Dr John Campbell said: "Our preferred position is the person is registered in New Zealand. If not registered in New Zealand, the responsibility falls solely on to the doctor who is involved with that patient and making decisions on diagnosis and treatment."
