Tamil Nadu To Undertake Stem Cell Research

The central government has granted Rs 300 million to Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, to undertake stem cell research.//

CMC will pioneer experiments to see if stem cells can be developed into heart muscles, nerve cells and if primary cells can grow into specialized cells.

"It is a matter of great prestige that the CMC has been selected for this important project. It will have far-reaching implications in the lives of people and it is a tribute to the staff of CMC and its vision to provide as much relief, particularly to the poor and needy," George Chandy, CMC director told the media Monday.

CMC will work with five hospitals in the country - at Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Raxaul in Bihar, Jalna in Maharashtra, Tezpur in Assam and Gadhag in Karnataka - to provide web-based services to help the poor.

The medical college and hospital has also tied up with the Indian Space Research Organisation for a telemedicine project, the CMC director said. There is also a plan to network 40 other hospitals in the country with the CMC, he added.
