Tamil Nadu Emerging As Model State In Public Health Care: Governor

Tamil Nadu is emerging as a model state in public health for the rest of the country and its health care system has achieved international renown, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said today. //

'Several medical colleges, medical education and research institutes and health care centres contributed to the success of the health care industry in the state. The cost of health care had come down considerably and the quality and commitment of our doctors had gained recognition worldwide,' he said.

In this context, he said 16 patients from Guyana had come for treatment of heart ailments in a hospital at Chennai. He was told about this when the First Lady of Guyana had called on him at his residence yesterday.

Barnala was speaking at a public function after declaring open 100 houses built for the members of Mahasemam, a self-help group federation. The houses were constructed by the US-based Habitat for Humanity International (HHI), in collaboration with the SHG Federation and Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) at Kathapatti village near here.

Barnala also laid the foundation for 1000 houses being built by the same group. The HHI provided a grant of USD 500 for each house, besides a special grant of Rs 5000 for construction of modern toilets for each house.
