Experts from across the world have assembled in Glasgow and discussing on the issue of how to tackle drug abuse in communities. The conference reviewed methadone programmes and rehabilitation// services. This is the fourth annual National Drug Treatment Conference. Drug abuse is increasing day by day in UK. It was very disturbing when a11-year-old girl had admitted taking heroin for two months. Neil Hunter, Glasgow Addiction Services Partnership, said that there was no overnight solution. This is because these people have complex problems. He said that about 1,200 people have access to training, employment and education at the end point of their rehabilitation in Glasgow.

The conference is looking at how to treat drug addicts apart from methadone. Mr. Hunter said that the large methadone programme is very effective. Professor Jason White, director of treatment services for alcohol and drug abuse for South Australia, said that these rehab programmes should be tailor made and should suit different people. People should be made to know that drug rehabilitation is long-term process.

Bill Nelles is general secretary of the Methadone Alliance who has received methadone treatment for 20 years. He said that the treatment given to heroin addiction or others are very good. Hence says that one should be able to have full range of options available. For those who respond to methadone they should be able to access methadone. Conservative Leader Annabel Goldie said that in Scotland there are not enough facilities. Above all these treatments one has to have the self realization.
