The Kalimati Chest Hospital, which is the country's only tuberculosis hospital that was shut for the last three years, restarted its services from Thursday.//

The 37-bed hospital in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu has resumed its services from Thursday the 17th of August, with 25 beds having been made available for the present.

The deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Amik Sherchan, addressing the congregation at the programme organised to mark the resumption of the services said that the government would begin to work out necessary procedures, to make sure that the hospital would not have to close down again.

He further stated that the government has this year already allotted three million rupees as against 900, 000 that was sanctioned last financial year. It has been reported that the hospital would currently have three medical officers and one medical director along with five nursing staff to run the hospital smoothly. It was reported that the Nepal Tuberculosis Prevention Organisation is in charge of the hospital and that there is no other specialised hospital in Nepal to serve TB patients.

The hospital was created 35 years ago with a primary aim of being able to provide extensive medical care to complicated tuberculosis patients. It was explained that the TB patients in Nepal had been suffering a lot due to the lack of facilities for treatment with the closure of this only TB hospital from the past 3 years.
