Syphilis on the Rise in China

The National Centre for STD control in China has revealed that there is a significant increase of syphilis cases in their country. This has been reported in the current issue// of Lancet.

Statistics indicate that there were only 0.2 cases of syphilis per one lakh people between 1989 and 1992. But the number has soared to 5.1 in 2005. Congenital syphilis is also on the rise these days.

China was totally free from syphilis from 1960 as there were stringent measures to control this disease then. Health care system was better and was available to everyone. Brothels were abolished. Frequent screening drives and treatment were rendered to the affected people.

Various factors have been attributed to the current condition. Change in life style pattern, increase of brothels, expensive and mediocre health care facilities are some of the reasons cited by research workers.

Syphilis is said to affect cardio vascular and nervous system. It has a very strong and negative impact on reproductive system as well. It also causes Genetic Ulcers.

Researchers aver that this disease can be brought under control if Chinese Government adopts the right kind of syphilis eradication programmes and implement them.
