Sweltering Heat in Madhya Pradesh Claims Fifteen Lives

The summer sun continued to blaze down on Madhya Pradesh Tuesday, taking temperatures to more than 46 degrees Celsius in the northern parts of the state, as the heat wave claimed six more lives taking the toll to 15.

The weather officials had no hope to offer, saying the hot weather would persist for the next two days.

The six deaths include two each in Shivpuri, Morena and Damoh.

The mercury soared to more than 46 degree Celsius at many places in northern Madhya Pradesh, with Datia turning out to be the hottest at 48 degrees.

Among other places, it touched 45.5 degrees in Khajuraho, 45.1 degrees in Chhatarpur, 44.8 in Gwalior and in Bhopal it was 40.1 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature came down to around 40 degrees in Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur bringing some respite to people.

Meanwhile, meteorological department director D.P. Dubey said the monsoon was expected to arrive in the state on June 15 and not June 13 as expected normally.

Last year, it arrived on June 29.

Meanwhile, light rainfall occurred at isolated places in Rewa, Jabalpur and Sagar divisions Monday night and more showers were expected at these places over the next day.
