Surgery to remove tumors in the spine

Christopher Ames, Neurosurgeon at University of California, San Francisco have developed a surgery method that uses standard and innovative devices to first remove and then reconstruct portions of the cervical spine in order to access tumors. // Tumors which are present in the bone of the cervix region are very difficult to operate.

The neurosurgeon used a new technique called Lateral Paramedian transpedicular which uses advance spinal instrumentation and reconstructive strategies by which it is possible to remove the cervical spinal tumors directly without neural manipulation. After the bone is removed, surgeons have a direct line of sight to the tumour and are able to remove it in its entirety without having to move or manipulate the spinal cord. It is possible to remove tumors which is located in the middle of the spinal cord and attached to the lining of the spine.

Ames said, We are treating patients with this technique who are told by physicians that nothing more can be done and the next step is to train other surgeons in the technique so it is accessible to patients throughout the country.
