Surgery for early stage prostate cancer is better than waiting

In a research report done by Swedish scientists its said that it is better// to go for surgery while in early stage of prostate cancer than to wait and see if the disease progresses.

Surgery for treating prostate cancer, also known as prostatectomy, is a common procedure. The researchers had conducted he study to see if prostatectomy done in early stages of prostate cancer benefits the patients more than watching and waiting the cancer in the prostate gland to develop before going for the surgery.

Researchers are of the opinion that watching the patient in the early stages of prostate cancer and waiting for it to spread before conducting prostatectomy may not be much beneficial to the patients in terms of mortality and disease being spread to other parts of the body.

The results of the study, reported in the latest edition of New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that prostatectomy done in the early stages of cancer increases the rate of survival of the patients below 65 years of age by 40%. The rate of spread of cancer from the target cells to other locations, also known as metastasis, gets reduced by 44% when surgery is performed early. Although after a follow up period of ten years, early prostatectomy does not seem to be much beneficial in reducing the rate of mortality by a big margin, this procedure is substantially more advantageous in reducing the spread of the disease. , prostatectomy, prostate cancer, metastasis, rate of mortality, early stage, rate of survival
