Sunbed, a Hotbed for Cancers

Skin cancer amongst sunbed users has gone up three times in the last ten years, a recent insight has shown. Nearly 100 patients are dying annually due to cancer caused by sun// beds.

It has come to light that nearly 83% of sun beds have UV light outputs that have flouted stipulations laid down by the British and European standard. Further, there has been a 30% increase in private sunbeds, research has shown. Many of the sunbeds are without supervision, and are coin- operated. These come with no age restrictions, or the permissible number of times the sunbed could be used.

Researcher Dr Harry Moseley of Nine walls Hospital and Medical School, Dundee, said 'Sunbeds should be regulated and there should be a licensing system. It would force operators to ensure information is given to the public, so that people know they are increasing their risk of skin cancer. The more you use them the more you increase your risk. If people want to use them and it makes them feel good then that is their decision, but they should know what they are getting into.'
