Sun, Sand and Smoke! A Bad Deal for New South Wales Women

A NSW government health report has proved the ill-effects of frequent basking in the sun, which is a significant cause of skin cancer. The report also established the// increase in lung cancer among NSW women due to smoking.

The recent New South Wales Report has shown an increase in the number of lung cancer cases by 11 per cent during 1995 to 2004 coupled with a 21 per cent increase in melanomas during the same period. The positive part of the report depicted an improvement in the survival rates and decrease in the death rate for most cancers.

NSW Assisting Health Minister Frank Sartor said "The report contains some sobering statistics on rising rates for some cancers, but also declining death rates for most cancers and overall improving survival rates. The NSW government is making real progress in the fight against cancer, but this report emphasizes that we have more work to do."
