Study shows that interventions from health workers can bring about changes in asthma causes

In a study that was published in American Journal of Public Health, researchers had been able to show that it //is possible to reduce the causes of asthma in children by interventions due to health workers.

Researchers had identified 274 low-income households having children in the age group of 4 to 12 yrs who have asthma. The study was carried on for a period of one year during which community health workers used systematic interventions. Some of these interventions were assessment of the home environment, education imparted to parents, support provided to encourage healthier habit formations, and resources provided to implement the new ideas. Participant households were divided into two groups, one had a highly intensive series of visits from the health workers during the time period and other had only one visit from the health workers for the entire year.

The results of the study show that symptoms of pediatric asthma declined considerably in the first group that received intensive health interventions. Quality of life also improved in these households considerably.

Researchers are of the opinion that health care when reaches down to the last rung of the social ladder, it is possible to reduce ailments and consequently improve the quality of life for children of these environments.
