( According to a latest study men seem to...)Stroke Treatment Works Better For Men,Health

According to a latest study men seem to be benefited more from clot busting treatment than women after a stroke. This was published// in the March 13 issue of the scientific journal Neurology.

This study was conducted on 333 people who were subjected to drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) three hours after they suffered a stroke. It was found that men fared better than women after 3 months of tPA treatment.

While discussing the reasons for women faring poorly after stroke and tPA treatment, Mitchell S. V. Elkind, Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center said that the blood of women have higher level of substances which will cause clots.

He also added that post-menopausal women are at an increased risk of not responding to tPA treatment irrespective of whether they are on hormone replacement therapy or not. But women should continue to take the tPA treatment as it is the only recommended treatment for acute ischemic stroke.

The study also divulged that people who suffered a stroke on their left side of the brain had better recovery after three months of tPA treatment. Elkind opines that that more exhaustive study on this subject is needed to confirm these findings.
