Eating fish at least once a month can minimise the risk of ischemic stroke in men according to the Harvard researchers.

Around 607 participants developed stroke over a period of 13 years in the new study involving more than 43,005 men aged 39 to 76. Ischemic stroke// which is caused by a clot that blocks the blood vessel supplying the brain with blood was confirmed with 378 participants, 105 were confirmed as hemorrhagic stroke, caused by a leaky blood vessel that bleeds into the brain, and the rest could not be classified from the data available.

Risk of ischemic stroke was found to be lower among men who consumed more fish when compared with those who ate fish less than once per month. Risk of ischemic stroke was reduced by 42-percent even with a small amount of fish consumption, one to three times per month.

The reduced risk was 46-percent lower for those who consumed fish at least five times per week.Results show that men who ate fish at least once per month had a 44-percent lower risk of ischemic stroke compared with those who ate fish less than once per month.

Researches have proved that diet rich in fish may even be better than a diet rich in vegetables reducing a substance in the body, called leptin, known to increase the risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, and heart attack.
