New guidelines that have come into force which have made it mandatory for all adults over 40 years to go in for a heart disease screening. This is regardless of the fact that the family may have no history with regard to cardiovascular // problems. In cases where there is a history of such problems, the tests will have to be undergone before 40 years by the adults.

As many as six stroke and heart societies have given their support for the guidelines. This will contribute towards lesser instances of strokes and heart attacks, and lesser risks for those who belong to the high-risk category. The Primary Care Cardiovascular Society, HEART UK, Diabetes UK, the British Hypertension Society, the British Cardiac Society, and the Stroke Association recommended these measures.

Tighter targets have also been set with regard to blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure by the Diabetes UK, with the object of reducing the instances of heart diseases. The optimal blood pressure level is at 140/85 according to the new guidelines.

Many lives are expected to be saved as a result of these preventive cardiology measures. There will be greater focus on patients with narrowed and hardened arteries and those with diabetes, and other people enjoying good health, but run the risk of contracting the symptomatic atherosclerotic disease. Heart disease is the chief killer of people in Ulster and the heart disease average in the province is higher than that of the average of UK.
