Strict Vigilance against Bird Flu in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Donald Tsang said that the public should be responsible and support all the measures taken by the government to keep the bird flu scare at bay. //

He asked the public not to worry and that the government is making necessary arrangements to provide timely warnings and emergency tackling plans.

He said this at the Center for Health Protection in a meeting. He said that they should be well prepared to tackle a pandemic.

Tsang said that working with the community to minimize disease spread in Hong Kong is one of the HKSAR government's top priorities.

He also mentioned about the death of a 32-year-old man early this month due to bird flu in the Guangzhou, about 200 kilometers north of Hong Kong.

After this incident due to sparking fears of possible avian influenza outbreak Hong Kong health authorities had decided to suspend live poultry import from Guangdong Province.

The man’s death was confirmed by the laboratory that it was due to avian flu.

Shortly after this the health authorities said the spread of infectious diseases and the risk of human infection can be minimized if all sectors maintain vigilance and adopt preventive measures.
