Stress triggers acne

One of the main concerns of teenagers heading back to school is the attack of acne on their skin. Dermatologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center say that stress is one of the main causes for an attack of acne.

Mounting stress produces increased secretion of the hormone androgen //which results in an increased production of acne-causing oil. Teenagers are more likely to suffer from acne due to the hormonal changes that are already underway. Pimples occur when excess oil accumulates around skin cells helping bacteria to thrive, resulting in redness & inflammation.

Washing the skin clean with a mild cleanser, day and night, is essential in keeping away pimples. However, skin must not be scrubbed or washed too often, since this may trigger irritation or excessive oil secretion. An over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide preparation can help clear up acne above and below the surface of the skin.

If pimples persist long after the stress is over & after following the above suggestions, it is advisable to meet your doctor to consider prescription medications.
