The increase in the number of C-section births is partly attributed to the increased prevalence of the procedure among celebrities, researchers said. Madonna, Brittany// Spears, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow have all opted for the C-section and this is setting a bad trend since people are apt to follow their example.

'There's no doubt in my mind that the current interest in elective cesarean births has been ignited by the fact that in our pop culture many celebrity deliveries have been elected cesareans,' said Manuel Porto, MD, chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Irvine.

The National Institutes of Health says that the current prevalence of C-section births in the US is 29.1 percent and despite increased risks to mother and child, this rate has jumped by 40 percent between 1996 and 2004.
