Squabbles put overseas doctors’ agenda on the back burne

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has said that the scheme proposed to evaluate overseas trained doctors, has not made much progress.//

In July, a scheme was made public by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and was planned to be formalized by December; this was thought to be need of the hour especially after a furore at Bundaberg Hospital, involving a foreign doctor and the death of 17 patients.

AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said, "Each state agrees there is a need for universal national standards of a higher level, but they can't agree on which one to take - they would prefer it to be their own. The states have to get bigger than that and get over that and come up with a scheme that will provide confidence to the Australian public."
