Spurious Liquor Claims 13 Lives In Orissa

Spurious liquor has allegedly killed at least 13 people in Orissa's Ganjam district over the past three days and left more than 15 others ill, a health official said Monday.//

The deaths and illnesses were reported from the five hamlets of Badahuma, Khajuria Pali, Sana Ramachandrapur, Madshurchuan and Baunsiapada in Ganjam, about 130 km from here.

"Although officially we have not confirmed it as a liquor tragedy, most of the people who died or became ill were brought to the hospital in an inebriated state," district health chief U.K. Tripathy told IANS.

"All of the affected were habitual drinkers and we suspect all the deaths and illnesses might have been caused by spurious liquor," he said.

The official said the affected people were being treated in hospitals.

"We have sent medical team to examine health of other people in the locality. I too visited the villages Sunday night," Tripathy said.

The death toll and the number of those who were ill could go up, he said, adding that it was not clear whether the affected people had consumed spurious liquor from one outlet or several outlets.

The villagers were also known to manufacture liquor illegally, he said.
