Mumbai: Soy meal is finding itself in myriad plates and palates. People are moving on and Soy meal is fast becoming a chosen, safe substitute for protein, after the bird-flu crisis and the resultant fear of tucking into chicken. //

Soy exports have never been so good. In March alone, India’s soy meal exports crossed 750,000 tones, breaking past records compared to 225,000 tones during the same time last year. According to Rajesh Agarwal , chairman of the Soybean Processors Association of India, the demands were greater from China, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia.

Chickens have been culled in huge numbers and thousands of people have been brought under the scanner for monitoring since February after the first two outbreaks. Last week, there were further reports of bird-flu in Maharashtra and Madhyapradesh. Officials have confirmed that ,the third bird-flu outbreak, is not to be considered as a fresh one because they are a fallout of the infections from the same area distinguished as a bird-flu zone.
